Teamsters Local 727 won a five-year contract for eight Laz Meters street closure monitors, folding it into an existing Laz Meters contract the union secured on behalf of the parking meter company’s 40 other employees. This was the first contract of its kind for this group of workers and it took only two weeks of negotiations to reach ratification.
“We’re extremely pleased with how smoothly this process went for our new union members,” said John Coli Jr., President of Local 727. “Typically, first contracts take about a year for the parties to come to an agreement, but we presented a united front from the get-go and fought hard for these workers to get a fair deal. We commend Laz for negotiating with us in good faith and look forward to future organizing victories like this one.”
The new union members will receive, among other benefits, guaranteed yearly raises, Local 727 health and welfare paid by the employer (with dental, vision, life insurance, and prescription discount card included), Local 727 pension benefits and Local 727 legal and educational assistance. They also get an accelerated vacation schedule, a generous number of holiday, sick and personal days, plus enhanced job protection procedures.
“The parking industry has been the heart and soul of this local union for decades, and these new members will be vital to Local 727’s future,” Coli said. “We are proud to represent them.”
The contract term runs from March 1, 2017 through June 30, 2022.
