President Beecher of Local 142 Ready to Help Group Continue Growing
As 2016 begins, the Teamsters Joint Council 25 Women’s Committee is setting its sights on another successful year aimed at growth, participation and education for Teamster women across Illinois and northwest Indiana.
The Women’s Committee Executive Board on Dec. 16 elected Lisa Beecher (above) of Teamsters Local 142 as President, Esmeralda Tapia of Teamsters Local 458M as Secretary-Treasurer and Tracy Reed of Teamsters Local 743 as Recording Secretary. The new officers’ two-year term began Jan. 1.
“I’m honored and excited about my new role,” said Beecher, who previously served a two-year term as the Women’s Committee Recording Secretary.
In addition to the upcoming Fourth Annual Gala Dinner Dance on Feb. 27, quarterly membership meetings, an annual breast cancer walk and other outings, the Women’s Committee again will sponsor a rank-and-file member to attend the Teamsters Women’s Conference Sept. 22-24 in Hollywood, Calif.
Since Joint Council 25 President John T. Coli founded the organization in 2009, the Women’s Committee has brought together representatives from every Joint Council 25 affiliate to strengthen communication and leadership opportunities for women throughout the union.
Over the last few years, the Women’s Committee has expanded its participation and continues to promote education for Teamster women through a scholarship program, annual health fair and guest speakers at regular meetings.
“We’ve remained successful thanks to support from the Joint Council and individual local unions. The teamwork and talents of our Executive Board members also have been integral to our success,” Beecher said. “We still have more to do as we aim to increase participation at our general membership meetings and other functions.”
For a voluntary $10 annual fee, members receive an official Women’s Committee membership card, meeting notices, opportunities to get involved and the satisfaction of supporting an organization that unites and educates women members, promotes their involvement in the union and builds solidarity.
