Workers Want Decent, Affordable Health Care and Retirement Security

Dockworkers at XPO Logistics in Aurora filed for union representation on March 21 with Teamsters Local 179 — the latest action by workers across the U.S. who are banding together to fight for fair treatment at one of the largest transportation and logistics companies in the world.

The 43 dockworkers at the former Con-way Freight are planning to join the freight workers in Aurora who formed their union as Teamsters last year. The Aurora dockworkers would also join workers in Miami; Laredo, Texas; Vernon, Calif.; North Haven, Conn.; and King of Prussia, Pa. who also have already unionized as Teamsters. In addition, 33 drivers at XPO in Trenton, N.J. filed for their Teamsters election on March 15.

So far, nearly 500 XPO workers have voted to join the Teamsters.

“The dockworkers in Aurora have seen the drivers, their co-workers, take the bold step of forming their union and they want to get on the same path toward a more secure future,” said Ernie Soehl, Director of the Teamsters National Freight Division. “We look forward to this campaign expanding to the dock at XPO.”

“Like the freight workers before them, the dockworkers reached out to us because they are tired of being mistreated and they want a fair workplace,” said Tom Flynn, President of Local 179. “It is very exciting to see this campaign expand to the dock here in Aurora.”

Port, freight and warehouse workers at XPO are coming together across the country in their fight for a more secure future.
